Those bloody railings

With much fanfare, Mike Torode revealed the solution to the problem of the 'safety' railings blighting the east end of the brand-spanking-new markets this weekend. Big planters will be installed instead, to achieve the same effect of blocking access to the granite plinths.

If you think the problem with the railings is just that they look a bit crap, we have a solution.

But if you think the problem is that these railings are the most ludicrous expression of nannyism ever to be spewed forth from our executive legislature, then replacing them with differently-shaped but more aesthetically pleasing expressions of nannyism doesn't really get to the nub of the matter...

You can't help but wonder that if this is a genuine problem - why was it not dealt with at the planning stage? Surely if it had been picked up at that time then it could have been dealt with in a better way that some giant plant pots.

It seems that it is now reasonable for parents to delegate responsibility for their children (for whose protection this must be) to all & sundry which seems somewhat strange.

It may be that these planters improve the area & i reserve judgement until they are installed but I do have to agree with you completely. We ought to be trusted to be accountable for our own actions & those of our offspring.

Well it appears that the railings have now been replaced - although there is no sign of the plant pots!
